I think you have hit the nail on the head in your final paragraph. It does indeed sound like your Airfix MRRC motor is the version intended for slot-car racing. I had a couple of these motors many years back that behaved (apart from the smoothness) altogether differently, but the kit-built locos they inhabited were sold off long ago. 12/31/2011. 1/32nd Scale MRRC Kellison Kit Car #90. The Kellison. This is perhaps one of the oddest choices for a slot car I have seen in quite awhile. The Kellison was a body kit car named after the maker. MRRC have modeled the J4, which is a fairly simple looking animal, with some similarities to a Ferrari 250 GTO in lines - - but he didn't copy the Ferrari - this came out in 1958, and was only 39 inches high.... and as Viv reminds me, that's an inch lower than a GT40 - and several years earlier.

This could be a sticking bush or a loose bush rotating in its mount, but as you mention noise I would investigate gear mesh.
